![]() So with the gameplay Luminous has been working on, I really can't wait to see how all this turns out." Luminous really gave us a lot of leeway to work with the script and for actors to really bring something personal to each of their characters. Performance capture is very much a physical medium as well as vocal medium, and so in addition to finding the walk for every character, and Ella's character, it was finding the voices for those characters. She has this kind of hip-hoppy kind of walk, and Ella herself is very athletic. "One thing we really worked on with Ella was the walk - the character's walk. Ella should really do comedy - she's got a wicked sense of comedy - I think it's a really fun pair I think players will get a really big kick out of. "Frey has Cuff - Jonathan Cake plays a wonderful straight man to Ella. And this culture clash that's set up between her character Frey and this land is wonderful - it's really fun. And when she finds herself going to a portal to this land - Athia - it's like she is confronted by that. When you become 21 something happens where you really want your own identity. And her purpose in life is really to figure out the puzzle of who she is. "She's a transactional New Yorker, she's an orphan, she's very angry. And I think this is really Frey's journey in Athia in Forspoken. ![]() "When I first got together with Ella we sat in my living room and we just talked about family - about our mothers and fathers, when they were there and when they weren't there. And when I'm first starting a project I think really deeply about the big themes - what are they and how do they relate to my own life? And then I ask the actors to do the same. "I think this is really a story about tribe and family. Keegan said the following, which we have transcribed in full below for context: The comments above were made by BAFTA-nominated performance director Tom Keegan, who is overseeing performance capture on Forspoken. Other descriptors of Forspoken's main character seen to be negative Black stereotypes have also been criticised, such as a mention of Holland as being "an orphan" and "very angry". The comment was made during a recent preview session attended by Eurogamer, and was part of a section dedicated to the game's performance capture. DualShockers gave the title a 6.5/10, touting it simply as "fun, but flawed.Square Enix has come under fire for describing Forspoken protagonist Frey Holland, who is Black, as having a "hip-hoppy kind of walk". It finalizes by stating that "combining the two entities will further enhance the Group’s ability to develop HD games." Though a game's quality is ultimately subjective, and some players clearly had fun with Forspoken, many criticized the game due to its allegedly empty open world, incessant dialogue, and unfulfilling story. However, the team that ended up becoming Luminous was the same one that developed Final Fantasy XV, a title that, though much better-received than Forspoken, did suffer through a lot of developmental turmoil.Īccording to Square Enix, the reason behind the merger comes from "the company's efforts to further bolster the competitive prowess of development studios, a goal set forth under its current medium-term business strategy." The press release praises Luminous Productions, stating that the team is "equipped, not only with AAA title development capabilities, but also technical expertise in areas such as game engine development." Luminous Productions was officially established in 2018, which is why Forspoken was their first and only game. They add that they will deliver an update on said patch soon and that the previously confirmed DLC "In Tanta We Trust" will suffer no interruptions and is still slated to arrive this Summer. RELATED: Fospoken’s Story Was Reportedly “Nothing Like” The Original PitchAs per an official statement by Luminous, as seen below, the merger into Square Enix proper will officially occur on May 1, up until which the team will focus on delivering patches to improve the Forspoken's visual performance. Though Forspoken wasn't a commercial flop, ranking seventh in the list of best-selling games in the United States for January 2023, as per NPD, Square still clearly considered that the Luminous devs were better off working on other projects, rather than making their own. Its developers will be folded into the larger Square Enix development arm.Luminous Productions officially released only one title, the critically mixed open-world RPG Forspoken, which came out about a month ago, so it appears far from coincidental that Square Enix is now deciding to shut the studio down. Publisher Square Enix has just confirmed via a short press release that its subsidiary studio, Luminous Productions, will be shutting down.
